The 1st Generation Daihatsu Tanto was introduced in 2003. The 2003 Daihatsu Tanto is a front engine front/four wheel drive subcompact kei car. Mechanically the Daihatsu Tanto is essentially a taller version of the Daihatsu Move. The main feature of the Daihatsu Tanto 2003 is that it features an ordinary rear side door on the left side but on the right side there is a sliding door without an intermediate pillar. Production of the 1st Generation Daihatsu Tanto lasted for 9 years, the Daihatsu Tanto was available to purchase in the years 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and the year 2011. The Daihatsu Tanto was available in 4 variants L, RS, X and custom. The price of the 2003 Daihatsu Tanto was fairly competitive when compared to other cars in the same class available in the local market.

The exterior of the 1st Generation Daihatsu Tanto features a fairly boxy but unique design language, The front end houses angular rectangular styled side swept headlights, small circular standard fog lights and a rectangular air intake with dual inserts. The rear end houses small square taillights, a large chrome trim pieces and a standard case hatchback. The Custom variant of the Daihatsu Tanto features a slightly more aggressive design language. All variants except the Custom feature identical styling in every aspect. The front end of the 1st Generation Daihatsu Tanto Custom features sharp narrow sleek side swept headlights, a chrome grille, triple air intake and long narrow rectangular fog lights. The rear end houses a roof spoiler angular side swept taillights and a standard case tailgate. The overall exterior of the 2003 Daihatsu Tanto features a fairly distinctive design language that allows it to stand out among its competition.

The interior of the 2003 Daihatsu Tanto features the use of black plastic trim pieces. The front and rear seats are covered in fabric. Standard features include air conditioning, power steering, power mirrors, power windows, power lock doors, trip computer, tachometer and a stereo speaker audio system. The higher end X and RS variants feature climate control and front heated seats. Options include automatic climate control, a sunroof and leather upholstery. The overall interior of the 1st Generation Daihatsu Tanto features a good amount of interior space for a kei car of its compact exterior dimensions.
